Slice of Life Day 13: Waimea Surprises

Our trip up the volcano at Waimea Canyon on the island of Kauai was amazing. Scary, but amazing. We would stop at various lookouts all the way up. We took so many pictures it was ridiculous, but how could you not? There were markers to let us know when a lookout was coming.
At these lookouts there would be lots of people taking pictures, walking close to the edges, and maybe even taking off on a nearby trail. But at one of the lookouts we had a surprise.

When we got near the lookout, there was a man dressed as a native Hawaiian. He just stood there on the pedestal. A few people went up and talked to him. They asked him about what he did and he said he hunts. They asked him other questions about what he hunted and how he did that, etc. He was in character and gave interesting answers.
After we looked at the canyon in this spot and took loads of pictures, we went back by the man. This time he had on a mask that he wears when he hunts. I'm so glad he was willing to stand there all day and give us a glimpse of that life.
In case you were wondering, yes, there were spots to use the bathroom. Not the best in the world, but at that point, who cares?
I had to include this sign. It says: "Wai'ale'ale  One of the wettest spots on earth.
Elevation: 5,140 feet    Now you know!

Aloha and Mahalo for taking this journey with me!  See you tomorrow!
