Before we leave the island of Kauai on this travel journal, I have to tell you about the roosters on this island. I might have mentioned before that they were everywhere and seemed to be in charge. They were wild, but also rather tame. The fact is, they seem to own the place!
On our arrival to the island, we were waiting to pick up our rental car and I noticed a large rooster just walking around the lot. I mentioned it to my husband and we continued to watch it as it meandered through the area, going where ever it wanted. Interesting, I thought.
We settled into our condo that evening and were very comfortable in our new living space and bedroom. We slept well. That is until the natural alarm clock woke us. Yes, every morning we were on the island this bird decided it was his job to get us up and moving. It was not just some rooster down the road. It seemed to be right outside our door even though we never saw him.

Another time we saw one of these crazy birds was while eating lunch at the restaurant across the road. There was another hotel nearby and it seemed that those tourists were feeding the roosters. There were bunches of them in the courtyard.

The rooster I liked the best was on the way up to Waimea Canyon. He was beautiful. He strutted around the spectators as they looked at the beautiful canyon. He didn't come up to anyone, but when some children went up to him he simply stood there. I think he even posed for me to take a picture.

It is said that these jungle fowl were brought to Kauai by the Polynesians as a source of food, thriving on an island where they have no real predators. One person said they stay there because the tourists feed them!

Joke of the day: Why do Kauai chickens cross the road?  Answer: Because they own it!

  2. These are the types of stories I like to read from travelers....unique and fun. I am sure that rooster who woke you up each morning just did not want you to miss any part of the day. And yes,....that one did pose for you. Very handsome bird! Jackie http://familytrove.blogspot.com/
